Deer Mice

Deer mice are bicolored native mice — brown above, white below — that live in outbuildings, crawl spaces, and rural Whidbey structures. They are the primary local carrier of hantavirus, making their droppings a genuine health concern.

How to identify deer mice

About 3 inches with a sharply two-toned body, white feet and underside, large eyes and ears, and a distinctly bicolored tail. Larger-eyed and more contrasting than a house mouse.

They are outdoor and semi-rural, moving into sheds, garages, cabins, and crawl spaces, especially in fall. They nest in secluded voids and stored materials and are active year-round in mild winters.

Why deer mice are a problem
