Bed bugs are small reddish-brown insects that feed on sleeping people and hide in mattresses, furniture, and cracks. They spread through travel and secondhand items and are a stressful, fast-spreading problem in Whidbey and Fidalgo homes and rentals.
How to identify bed bugs
About 1/4 inch, flat, oval, reddish-brown, and wingless — roughly apple-seed sized when fed. Eggs and young are much smaller and pale.
Behavior & season on Whidbey & Fidalgo
They hide near where people sleep — mattress seams, headboards, and baseboards — emerging at night to feed. They spread by hitchhiking in luggage, furniture, and belongings, and can survive months between meals.
Why bed bugs are a problem
Bites cause itchy welts and significant anxiety and sleep disruption, and infestations spread quickly through a home or building. They are extremely difficult to eliminate with DIY methods.
Signs of bed bugs activity
- Itchy welts in lines or clusters on skin after sleeping
- Tiny dark fecal spots on sheets and mattress seams
- Shed skins or live bugs in seams and crevices
- A sweet, musty odor in heavy infestations
