Carpet beetles are small oval beetles whose larvae damage wool, silk, feathers, and stored fabrics. Often mistaken for bed bugs, they are a common but overlooked cause of fabric damage in Whidbey and Fidalgo homes.
How to identify carpet beetles
Adults are 1/8 inch, rounded, mottled black, brown, and white; the damaging larvae are small, tan, and bristly-haired. Adults are often found near windows.

Adults feed on pollen outdoors and lay eggs indoors on natural fibers. The larvae do the damage over months, feeding on wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dried goods in closets, drawers, and under furniture.
Why carpet beetles are a problem
Larvae ruin clothing, rugs, upholstery, and stored textiles, and their bristly hairs can irritate skin. Damage accumulates slowly and is often blamed on moths before the beetles are identified.
