How to identify European paper wasps

About 3/4 inch, boldly black and yellow with orange antennae — easily mistaken for a yellowjacket, but slimmer with dangling legs and an open comb nest.

Behavior & season on Whidbey & Fidalgo

They nest earlier and in more concealed cavities than native paper wasps — pipes, vents, grills, and equipment — and have spread aggressively since arriving in the region. Colonies are active spring through fall.
