Ground beetles are dark, fast beetles that live under mulch, stones, and debris and wander indoors at night, drawn to lights and moisture. Common around Whidbey and Fidalgo, they are harmless and even beneficial predators of other pests.
How to identify ground beetles
Vary from 1/4 to 1 inch, usually shiny black or dark brown, with ridged wing covers and long running legs. They scurry quickly when exposed and rarely fly.
