Moisture ants are small yellow-brown ants that nest in chronically wet, decaying wood. Common in Whidbey crawl spaces and around leaking plumbing, they are a reliable warning sign of excess moisture and early wood decay in a home.

How to identify moisture ants
Workers are about 1/8 inch, uniformly yellowish to light brown, and give off a faint citronella odor when crushed. They have a single node and unevenly rounded thorax.
Behavior & season on Whidbey & Fidalgo
They nest almost exclusively in wood kept wet by leaks, condensation, or poor drainage, and swarm in late summer and fall. In our climate they thrive under vapor-barrier gaps and around crawl-space plumbing.
Why moisture ants are a problem
Moisture ants rarely attack sound wood, but they enlarge existing decay and their presence confirms an active moisture problem that will keep attracting wood-destroying pests if left alone.
Signs of moisture ants activity
- Small yellowish ants near plumbing, crawl spaces, or damp framing
- Late-summer swarmers
- Soft, spongy, or discolored wood
- A lemon-like smell when ants are disturbed
How Salty Dog treats moisture ants
We treat the nest, then focus on the underlying moisture — drainage, vapor barrier, and ventilation — because eliminating the water is what keeps them gone. Learn more about our Moisture Ant Control service, or browse the full Pest Library.

Frequently asked questions
Do moisture ants damage my house?
They mostly expand wood that is already rotting, but they are an early alarm that moisture is degrading your framing — worth addressing quickly.
How are they different from carpenter ants?
They are smaller and yellowish rather than large and black, and they need wet, decaying wood rather than merely damp wood.
