Odorous House Ants

Odorous house ants are tiny brown ants that give off a rotten-coconut smell when crushed. They trail indoors after rain to find sweets and water, making them one of the most common kitchen nuisance ants on Whidbey Island.

How to identify odorous house ants

Workers are about 1/16 to 1/8 inch, dark brown to black, with an uneven thorax and a node hidden beneath the abdomen. Crushing one releases a distinct sweet, rotten smell.

Behavior & season on Whidbey & Fidalgo

Colonies have multiple queens and move nests readily. Wet weather pushes them indoors to forage on sugars and grease along counters and baseboards, with activity highest spring through fall.

Why odorous house ants are a problem

They do not damage structures or bite, but they contaminate food, form large persistent trails, and can split into new colonies when sprayed with the wrong products, making a small problem worse.

Signs of odorous house ants activity

  • Fast-moving trails along counters and baseboards
  • A coconut-like odor when crushed
  • Ants clustered around sweets, spills, or pet food
  • Sudden indoor activity after rain

How Salty Dog treats odorous house ants

We use baits the colony shares rather than repellent sprays that cause budding, and seal the entry points and moisture sources drawing them in. Learn more about our Ant Control service, or browse the full Pest Library.

Frequently asked questions

Why did spraying make them worse?

Repellent sprays can cause multi-queen colonies to split and scatter. Targeted baiting is far more effective for this species.

Are they harmful?

They are a nuisance rather than a health or structural threat, but they contaminate food and are persistent without proper treatment.
