Odorous house ants are tiny brown ants that give off a rotten-coconut smell when crushed. They trail indoors after rain to find sweets and water, making them one of the most common kitchen nuisance ants on Whidbey Island.
How to identify odorous house ants
Workers are about 1/16 to 1/8 inch, dark brown to black, with an uneven thorax and a node hidden beneath the abdomen. Crushing one releases a distinct sweet, rotten smell.

Colonies have multiple queens and move nests readily. Wet weather pushes them indoors to forage on sugars and grease along counters and baseboards, with activity highest spring through fall.
