A strong, lingering odor coming from under the house usually means a rodent or other animal died in the crawl space. The smell means there is a rodent access point — and often an active infestation — that needs to be found and sealed, not just masked.

Rats and mice that get into a crawl space nest, breed, and eventually die there. The odor is the immediate problem, but the real issue is the opening that let them in and the contamination they leave behind.
What it means for your home
Beyond the smell, rodents in the crawl space contaminate insulation with droppings and urine, gnaw wiring and pipes, and draw in more pests. Removing the carcass without sealing the access just resets the clock.
