What’s most likely going on
Odorous house ants have many queens and move nests readily. Rain drives them inside to forage on sweets and grease along counters and baseboards, which is why the trails appear suddenly after a downpour.

They do not damage the home or bite, but they contaminate food and form persistent trails — and spraying them with the wrong product makes multi-queen colonies split and scatter, turning one problem into several.
