Small dark rod-shaped droppings in pantries, drawers, or along baseboards mean house mice are active indoors. They squeeze through gaps the width of a pencil, breed quickly, and contaminate food and surfaces, so droppings are usually the first sign long before you see one.
What’s most likely going on
House mice nest in warm voids near kitchens and utility rooms and forage close to shelter. The droppings, gnawed packaging, and greasy smudge marks along walls mark their runways.

Yes. Mice are nocturnal and secretive, so droppings and gnaw marks usually show up well before you ever see a mouse.
